The Bergara of the Embrace
The Peace Treaty, which on 31st August 1839 put an end to the first Carlist war, was signed in Bergara. To commemorate this event, which took place at Irizar Palace, the town council put up a modest memorial to mark the spot.
As soon as Peace was confirmed, the soldiers present came together and embraced in the nearby heritage of Fraiskozuri, between Santa Marina parish church and Egino Mallea and Irizar palaces. Four days later, the ceremony was repeated, on that occasion with the Gipuzkoa battalion.
On the other hand, to discover the location of the first embrace between General Espartero and General Maroto we just have to cross central Ibargarai Street to access the bike lane. Then, leaving the San Antonio neighbourhood on our left, which was once the general headquarters of Zumalakarregi, we reach Azkarruntz. Here, where Labegaraieta sports centre is now located, the first peaceful encounter between enemies took place. For that reason, it is known as Camo del Convenio and there, in the years following Peace, the main functions were held to commemorate the event. Later, Bergara named one of the central streets opened in 19th century “Convenio”.
