Originally from Bergara, Martin Agirre was canonised in the 19th century, several centuries after his martyrdom in Japan. Although his saint’s day falls on 16 September, on the previous Saturday Bergara holds a very popular agricultural fair. This popularity is due to both the flower competition and the sale of produce from all over the district (vegetables, fruit, and cheese), drum parades (tamborradas) for children and adults, and firework displays.
